Why should you check a website?
A website may look professional and still be deceptive. Scammers copy logos, colors and sign-in forms from familiar services. Before entering passwords, card details or personal information, carefully inspect the actual address and consider why you reached the page.
Inspect the actual domain
In the fictional example https://bank.example.com, the base domain is example.com and bank is a subdomain. By contrast, bank-example.com is a different domain. Do not trust a link merely because it contains a familiar company name. Inspect the full hostname and watch for lookalike characters.
Watch for misleading URLs
Links may contain many words, numbers, hyphens or subdomains that make them difficult to read. For example, https://secure-login.example.com is not proven to be an official service simply because it contains the words secure and login. An unusual URL is a reason to investigate further, not proof of fraud by itself.
HTTPS does not prove trustworthiness
HTTPS indicates that data is encrypted while traveling between your browser and the website. It does not prove that the website owner is trustworthy or that the content is safe. Even a deceptive website can have a valid HTTPS certificate.
Recognize fake sign-in pages
A suspicious page may request a password, card details or a one-time verification code while pretending to represent a bank, email provider or public organization. If you reached it through an unexpected message, do not complete the form. Open the official app independently or type the organization's known address.
Beware of urgency and unrealistic promises
Messages such as 'your account will close in 30 minutes' or 'you have won an expensive prize' may be used to rush you toward a website. Time pressure, threats and unusual offers are warning signs. Verify the claim through an independent official channel.
How to check a link with Elenxos
Instead of immediately opening an unfamiliar link, copy its address and use the Elenxos URL Scanner. Review the assessment category and available findings. Do not submit private links containing secret tokens, password-reset codes or other sensitive information.
What does a CLEAN result mean?
CLEAN means that the assessment did not find sufficient risk indicators based on the available information. It is not a security certification. If the website requests sensitive information or you reached it through a suspicious message, independently verify the organization even when the result is CLEAN.
What if you already opened a suspicious website?
If you only opened the page, avoid further interaction: close it and do not follow its instructions. If you entered a password, change it immediately through the official service and enable multi-factor authentication. If you disclosed banking details, contact your bank promptly. If you downloaded a file, do not run it and seek technical assistance if needed.
Elenxos evaluates risk indicators. CLEAN does not mean guaranteed safe.
